China

This is my second time visiting this massive and diverse country.  I came here to see the birth of my brothers child and to reinvent myself.  Follow me through the process.

It was the one thing i could salvage on my trip.  Im saving it for my friend Sami.

Open

The Lightning Strike; I feel my dad would of been proud.  Most lightning shots i achieve actually look like Lightning.  But due to a particular filter i had mounted on my camera i took this shot of lightning mid-day during a storm.  It really wasn't that close but it seemed so once the thunder clapped.  Since we are in the city the sound of Thunder got trapped in all the streets, alleyways and nooks inside one area and reverberated the roaring sound of thunder as if we were trapped in a bowl of it.  It was such a rush! What a moment.

Week 8; I continue to plow along i guess.

Week 7; This was the week that brought home little Joey Jr!!! It was everything unexpected except one thing...i expected it to be the most wonderful situation id ever been through and that expectation held serve.  It has seemed to vault me into an almost otherworldy mood. I am photographing like a mad man since his birth.

Open

Joeseph Beckley Li Hau-Koung Mock is born.  This little butterball weighed in at 7 and half pounds and was born on March 15th a little after 6.  The mother had an all natural birth and the both of them are doing just fine.  Uncle Rocky on the other hand has some diaper learning to grasp.

Open

Id seen this man from the 14th floor of the hospital walking back and forth over this trail. I ran down stairs and across the street to get a shot of him in his own little world.

Vision Quest

The Vision quest looms as the sun makes its turn

bringing us great fortune in this year we're re-born

we lift up our souls and dangle our feet

high from the perch of last years deceit

the gods carry on and they give us a choice

follow the sound or ignore the grand voice

accepting yourself is reviving yourself which leads to

an enjoyable everything else

"it is what it is" rings out deep inside

not from my heart and not from my mind

my body sighs relief as i feel the hole close

consciously my mind doesnt even know

ive healed and im here, living on strong

the vision quest is upon us, someday at dawn

Open

Silent Path

Silence arrives when my footsteps stop

the deafening absence vanishes with rain drops

pattering on leaves and worn out dirt

the silence is lost and far from this earth

the rain stops and the birds chime

singing their songs of rhythm and rhyme

darkness ensues not after long

making me realize silence is never really gone

Always there hidden underground

Always there when there is no sound

Week 6; this will be the last week photographing without baby in our lives :) Cant wait!!!

Week 2;  This week i went on a beautiful walk and enjoyed rain soaked days until finally we got one sunny day at the end of the week. Im getting more accustomed to China as you can see in these pictures. This week featured a lot of variety in cut off heads, reflections, self portraits and more shot from the hip.
Open
The Rains a coming; Im a HUGE rain fan and will likely end up living in Washington someday.  With that said my ears perked up while everyone elses fell flat when there was word the rains were coming.  I decided to climb up to the top of this mountain located behind our house. I met a friendly Chinese girl who offered to share her umbrella with me and walk to the top.  The higher we went the more stunning it was.  The final result was one of the most beautiful walks ive been on.

Here in China coffee isnte really everyones first choice in drink.  Burried beneath tea coffee isnt even an option really.  Starbucks thankfully is in one of the malls nearby and they sell coffee by the bag.  Also thank the angels for whoever gave my brother and his wife a coffee maker.  To celebrate the fact i have coffee on hand i took this self portrait of me in the apartment.  Casual day of laundry and a fresh cup of joe.  What a great feeling.

Open
Walkway Loop; I might begin a project called "In their little world" featuring photographs of people taken from an aerial view like this. Its been really fun seeing people from a different vantage point looking so small in a big world. Its almost like im witnessing God play a video game and we're all in it.

Touching The Industry

Week 1:  I touched down here in China and i already sense a growing change from the last time i spent time here.  Im less afraid to take more shots, less afraid to photograph strangers and worry about what reaction they might have.  Maybe i had a bit of culture shock the first time i came here but something is clearly different this time around.  Fellow photographer Spencer Herford told me my work is maturing.  That means a lot going forward and i look to build on that.

Chinese New Year Lanterns; The Chinese New Year is a big deal here.  Unlike New years in the states where its a one and done deal here in China the celebration and decorations last for weeks.  The lanterns are scattered all over the city.  These ones happen to be right outside the apartment im staying in.
Open
The Band Manager; Lately i've been shooting from the hip, a photography term which means to keep your camera at your side and snap a shot from the hip. Its been quite fun since sometimes you capture something and most the time you miss.  This time i happened to capture a man on a cart supporting someone singing in the street nearby.
